About

kristin vanderlip taylor, EdD is an Associate Professor of Art Education at California State University, Northridge. She is National Board certified in Early/Middle Childhood Art and taught visual art to students in grades TK-8 in the Los Angeles Unified School District. Dr. Taylor has been a member of the California Art Education Association and the National Art Education Association since 2002. She has received mutliple awards from NAEA and CAEA: Outstanding Higher Education Art Educator (2022 - CAEA); Pacific Region Elementary Art Educator (2017 - NAEA) Outstanding Art Educator of the Year (2016 - CAEA); and Outstanding Elementary Art Educator of the Year (2012 - CAEA).

kristin is passionate about: collaborative projects and research; issues-based curriculum design; critical, visual, and digital literacy; preservice art teacher education; and building communities for professional learning. She received her doctorate in Educational Leadership, Administration, and Policy (ELAP) from Pepperdine University, masters degree in Art Education, Multiple Subject and Single Subject Credentials from California State University, Northridge, and Bachelor of Art degree in Art with concentrations in photography and graphic design from Mount St. Mary’s University in Los Angeles.

Her research is centered on creating sustainable professional learning opportunities, from mentoring beginning visual art teachers to developing communities of practice that support inquiry-based reflective learning for visual art educators at all levels. She is the Principal Investigator/co-facilitator of the CSUN/CSULB Art Ed ColLab, a mentoring community of practice for beginning visual art teachers throughout the greater Los Angeles County/surrounding areas. This research project, developed in collaboration with with Dr. Laurie Gatlin and Dr. Brian Trimble from CSULB, is well into its fifth year in 2025-26. The goals of the Art Ed ColLab are:

  • to retain new art teachers in the profession and help promote job satisfaction

  • to build a cyclical, sustainable community of practice that continues to grow and support new art teachers

  • to serve as a model of early career teacher mentoring/professional learning that is content-specific and directly addresses the needs and concerns of beginning teachers
